Will I Need Sedation for My Dental Treatment?

Beautiful senior woman having dental treatment at dentist's office.Sedation dentistry helps induce calmness and create comfort during your dental visit. For some patients, sedation is helpful when getting a root canal or having a dental implant placed. For others, it may be needed for routine services like dental fillings or even for cleanings and examinations. Understanding the varying needs of our patients, we are pleased to offer a range of sedation options that can safely be used during any of the treatments we offer.

Types of dental sedation available at our Sarasota office include:

  • Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) for mild and temporary sedation
  • Oral Medication (conscious oral sedation) for moderate, longer-lasting sedation

Each option helps relieve anxiety and improve comfort during your treatment. However, none are suitable for every need. The best way to learn which type of sedation dentistry is right for you is through a one-on-one consultation with one of our experienced family dentists.

Which Procedures Require Dental Sedation?

Not all procedures require sedation dentistry, but many can be made more pleasant through its inclusion. Dental sedation is common during more extensive and complex procedures such as dental implant placement, tooth extraction, and smile makeovers. In addition, some patients find sedation useful during a root canal, scaling and root planing, and tooth decay treatment. Others still prefer to be sedated for general tooth cleanings, x-rays, and hands-on tooth and jaw examinations.

Each person has unique experiences, concerns, and needs. If you could benefit from sedation during your treatment, regardless of how involved or lengthy the procedure might be, we would be happy to assess your candidacy and discuss the benefits and limitations of our options.
