Whitening Deep Stains

Some tooth discoloration is topical. Known as extrinsic staining, this type of discoloration results from foods, such as dark sauces, and beverages, including soda, wine, coffee, and tea. Extrinsic stains respond very well to topical teeth whitening treatments, which can often eliminate the discoloration completely.

At The Smile Centre, we offer Zoom! for in-office treatment. Safe and incredibly effective, Zoom! can lighten your teeth as many as seven shades in just one hour. Results with Zoom! are long-lasting and can be extended through proper oral care and occasional touch-up treatments. We offer take-home kits for this purpose. Take-home tooth whitening kits can also be used as a stand-alone option.

Topical teeth whitening is exceptionally effective at removing surface stains. But topical solutions are not always the best option when it comes to deep stains, such as those caused by fluorosis, medication, years of tobacco use, or enamel thinning. In fact, they can sometimes make matters worse.

Advanced Cosmetic Treatments for Deep Tooth Stains

Deep stains, also known as intrinsic stains, cannot be lightened with bleaching solution. They have to be covered with a more advanced cosmetic option. We have found that porcelain veneers offer the most reliable, longest-lasting, and versatile solution for this problem.

Porcelain veneers are shaped and shaded to fit perfectly into your smile. Incredibly thin, veneers are placed over the front surface of teeth that have become marred by stains, chips and cracks, or other cosmetic issues, producing a natural-looking, stain and blemish-free appearance for years and years to come.

While veneers are the best solution for the cosmetic restoration of deeply stained teeth, they are not the only option. Dental bonding, also shaded to match adjacent teeth, is used to correct stains, misshapen teeth, small gaps, and more, while dental crowns can be used to restore teeth used for biting and chewing. Like veneers, these options cover the teeth, thereby eliminating visible staining.
