BOTOX® Cosmetic

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an FDA-approved injection treatment that is commonly used to treat forehead lines, crow’s feet and wrinkles between the brows (known as glabellar lines). However, in addition to aesthetic facial rejuvenation, BOTOX® Cosmetic is also used to address a variety of dental issues, such as:

  • TMJ/TMD: You use your temporomandibular joints every day to chew, speak, yawn and swallow. When these jaw joints are out of balance with your teeth and facial muscles, you may experience painful TMJ/TMD issues such as headaches, ear pain, shoulder aches and more. BOTOX® Cosmetic can mitigate many of these unpleasant symptoms.
  • Bruxism: Chronic teeth grinding (bruxism) can lead to severe headaches, aching jaws and ear pain. Customized mouth guards can be worn to ease the effects of bruxism, but BOTOX® Cosmetic is another option. It can relax the muscles responsible for teeth grinding and relieve a number of associated symptoms.
  • Gummy smiles: There are a number of factors that can cause the appearance of a gummy smile. In some cases, gummy smiles are the result of hypermobile lips (lips that contract too far when you smile). BOTOX® Cosmetic can relax these muscles and reduce the appearance of a gummy smile. During your initial consultation, we will determine if BOTOX® Cosmetic or other gum recontouring treatment is best for you.
  • Asymmetrical smiles: While surgery used to be the only way to correct an asymmetrical smile, BOTOX® Cosmetic has recently become an effective alternative to surgery in some cases. It relaxes lip muscles and can provide a more proportionate smile.

BOTOX® Cosmetic has been proven to successfully treat a variety of conditions caused by muscle overexertion. Numerous issues, such as uncontrollable blinking, excessive sweating and chronic headaches have been effectively treated with BOTOX® Cosmetic. Visit The Smile Centre to learn more.

Juvederm®

While BOTOX® Cosmetic utilizes botulinum toxin A to block the nerves responsible for dynamic wrinkles, Juvederm® is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your body, to fill in facial wrinkles around the nose and mouth, and add volume to the cheeks and lips.

Juvederm can also be used to treat dark gaps that occasionally emerge on the sides of teeth after periodontal treatment, implant therapy or dental crown restorations. These dark gaps, sometimes referred to as “black triangles”, can be eliminated with Juvederm. The unique Juvederm formula does this by adding volume to the gums and creating attractive gum contours.

Although recovery from BOTOX Cosmetic injections is minimal, there are several things patients should do to avoid complications during treatment, such as:

  • Lying down for at least one hour after treatment

  • Prolonged exposure to the sun
  • Taking blood thinning medication

Am I a Candidate for BOTOX Cosmetic and Dermal Fillers?

Ideal candidates for BOTOX Cosmetic and dermal filler treatment at The Smile Centre are adults looking to treat TMJ symptoms, bruxism, and jaw pain. Candidates should be in good overall health and free from any underlying health conditions that may complicate healing from BOTOX Cosmetic injections. Ideal candidates for this treatment are typically between the ages of 18 and 65 years of age. This treatment is a great non-surgical option for jaw pain improvement.

If you are someone who has experienced allergic reactions to the ingredients in BOTOX Cosmetic or dermal fillers, this treatment will not be recommended for you. Patients who experience muscle weakness will also not be considered eligible candidates.

Can I Still Receive BOTOX Cosmetic Treatment If I Have Dental Problems?

Although BOTOX Cosmetic injections should not typically interfere with your oral health and the function of your teeth, if you are a patient with dental problems such as gum disease, cavities, tooth decay, and other conditions that require dental treatment, we recommend treatment of them first before receiving BOTOX Cosmetic injections. This is because any dental pain you experience in your mouth may affect the way you recover from your BOTOX Cosmetic or dermal filler injections. If you have dental work done, wait at least two to three weeks after your dental procedure before receiving BOTOX.
