Tips for At-Home Oral Care

Posted: June 11, 2020

As we all are at home more these days, you may be wondering what you can do to keep your teeth and gums healthy. You may be trying to avoid unnecessary dental visits and medical care during this time. Here are a few tips for how you can keep your oral health in tip-top shape:

  • Brush every morning AND every night with fluoridated toothpaste
  • Floss once every day, particularly before bed
  • Use an electric toothbrush and a Waterpik
  • Limit your sugar intake
  • Hydrate throughout the day - drink more water

Avoiding tooth decay is a great way to prevent the need for emergency dental care. Cavities are quite common. They are caused by the activity of bacteria in your mouth. The bacteria create acidic byproducts as they break down the sugars and starches on your teeth enamel. This acid eats away at enamel over time, eventually forming a pit. Take the steps listed above to prevent decay. It’s important to floss. Cavities form in between your teeth just as easily as they form on your teeth.

If you are experiencing mild tooth sensitivity, that may not be an emergency dental issue. To treat the situation temporarily, switch to a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. It should calm down the sensitivity until you can get back in for a dental checkup.
