Be Fearless with Dental Sedation

Do You Have Dental Fear?

Dental anxiety and fear is one of the biggest reasons people avoid visiting the dentist. Yet, with advances in technology and procedures, dental visits are easier than ever before. One of the biggest contributors to an anxiety-pain-free dental experience is sedation dentistry. The Smile Centre features leading sedation options, including advanced IV sedation dentistry. Sedation can help block sensations of pain and put patients in a relaxed, calm state. With the help of sedation, we are often able to perform multiple procedures during one appointment, helping you receive the care you need in a timely manner and with fewer trips to the dentist.

Reasons You May Need Sedation

  • Dental anxiety or fear
  • Sensitive gag reflex
  • Bad past experiences
  • Fear of needles
  • Require dental surgery

Our Sedation Dentistry Options

To block sensations of pain or discomfort, we utilize a local anesthetic that is administered directly to the treatment site. The area surrounding the injection site will become numb to pain and you may feel only a slight pressure during the procedure. Local anesthetic is commonly used for most dental surgeries like root canals or dental implants. To give relaxed feeling and experience, we offer oral sedation and nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Oral sedation is administered as a pill several hours before your procedure and puts you in a drowsy, dream-like state. Nitrous oxide is a fast-acting sedation that is administered via a mask worn during treatment. It provides a soothing feeling and when the gas is stopped, you will quickly come out of the sedated state.

IV Sedation

We also feature advanced forms of sedation for those with severe anxiety or who have lengthy procedures scheduled. Dr. Richard Stanley is certified to provide IV sedation, which is the ultimate in conscious, soothing sedation. Administered intravenously, this form of sedation will put you into an extremely relaxed state where you will likely not even remember the procedure and may even fall asleep. For major dental surgeries we can arrange for general anesthesia, which induces a deep sleep, where you will likely remember nothing about the procedure.

Improve Your Quality of Life

By offering our patients sedation dentistry, we can help take away the fear of visiting the dentist and provide a lifechanging experience to your health and quality of life. The longer you wait to take care of concerns like tooth infection, missing teeth or gum disease, the more likely these conditions will worsen and develop further complications. Our doctors have experience in providing effective sedation and Dr. Stanley is a member of the Dental Organization of Conscious Sedation (DOCS) and completed an IV sedation residency at the University of Alabama-Birmingham Medical School. When you no longer have anything to fear from your dentist, you can receive the care you deserve.
